At Octopus Real Estate we hold rotational graduate schemes for people who are interested in being part of a thriving and diverse business.

Hear from one of our graduates, Oliver Cookson

How did you hear about the graduate/apprenticeship scheme?

I first heard about the Octopus Real Estate graduate scheme through an advert at Henley Business School. As a student I did not have much exposure to the specialist finance sector and at university it is rare to come across specialist finance firms specifically targeting graduates. The big consultancy firms and the large fund managers get most of the spotlight and so if the industry wants to attract graduates, they should start to advertise directly to get in front of the audience. It’s an interesting sector, students just need to know it’s there.

What have you learnt/achieved so far and since, what have you enjoyed & disliked the most, and what has been the biggest thing that has surprised you about the industry?

Over the first few months I received a whirlwind of information. Whether that is meeting new people, learning new terminology and processes, or understanding the different products across the business. While this is one of challenges, it is also hugely rewarding and part of the fun of the industry. You are always learning, and you get to experience the buzz of completing transactions early in your career, my first being in the third week of joining the business. Octopus Real Estate really does give you opportunity from day one. What surprises me about the industry is just how different each day is.

How would you like to develop your career in specialist finance?

I am early in my career, so my main target is to keep learning and developing the various hard and soft skills relevant to the industry. Like many of my peers, I would like to be in a fund manager’s position in the future, but at the moment I am focusing on perfecting the job I am currently in.

Would you recommend a graduate/apprenticeship scheme like this to other young people? Why?

Undoubtedly, yes! The fast-paced environment and high turnover of transactions is not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you want to learn quickly, gain varied exposure, grow your career fast, and are willing to work hard then I would recommend the scheme to anyone. Octopus Real Estate is unique as you can be part of this growth-orientated culture, but within a team that is supportive, like-minded, and fun to work with.
